About Villefranche-sur-Mer
Its scenic setting in one of the most enchanting sheltered bays of the French Riviera results in some of the most stunning panoramas you’ll find on the Côte d’Azur. But I mostly love this former fishing village for its genuine charm and lively village vibe.
The medieval center is a maze of sloping streets lined with pastel buildings, laundry hanging from windows, and locals chatting away. Even with the seasonal crowds, it keeps a real small-town feel that makes it different from its fancier French Riviera neighbors.
Not to miss are the mysterious medieval Rue Obscure, a shadowy passage running beneath the old town, the Chapelle Saint-Pierre with Jean Cocteau’s striking murals, the impressive Saint-Elme Citadel with its free museums, and the convivial port of La Darse. And then there’s the gorgeous Plage des Marinières with its clear, warm waters.
What if… You make this charming town your travel base to explore the French Riviera?

Let’s zoom in on all the ways you can get from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer.
1. By train from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer
The train is the fastest way to get to Villefranche-sur-Mer from Nice. The train ride on the Regional Express Train (TER) from Nice-Ville to Villefranche-sur-Mer (direction Menton) takes just 7 minutes. If you leave from Nice-Riquier, it’s 2 minutes. The train station of Villefranche-sur-Mer is located right above the divine Plage des Marinières, one of the top French Riviera beaches, and just a 10-minute walk from the historic center.
Regional trains fill up quickly in summer, especially on the commuter line between Nice and Monaco. If comfort is important to you, I’d strongly recommend skipping the rush hour crowds and traveling mid-morning or mid-afternoon instead.

2. By bus from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer
Because Villefranche-sur-Mer is so close to Nice, the bus is another convenient way to get there. The drive from Nice takes around 15 minutes. At €2.10 one-way for Zou and €1.70 for Lignes d’Azur, this is also a very budget-friendly option to get from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer.
Take Lignes d’Azur bus 15 at stop Lycée-Masséna or stop Arson / Port Lympia or Zou bus 600 from stop Arson in Nice to stop Octroi in Villefranche-sur-Mer. Both bus lines follow the same route. You hop off right at the Tourist Information Center in the center of town.
Another option is to take the hop-on hop-off bus, which has three planned stops in Villefranche-sur-Mer. Of the three stops, I’d hop off at stop Villefranche Citadelle to be at the center of the action. This is an open bus, so from the top level, you can enjoy the beautiful views to the fullest.

A more wallet-friendly option is ride-sharing to get from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer. Bolt is the go-to ride-sharing option on the French Riviera because it’s a bit cheaper than Uber. Just order your ride from the app, and the driver will get you to the center of Villefranche-sur-Mer.

5. By bike (self-guided or tour)
A 20-minute e-bike ride along the scenic Boulevard Maeterlinck (which transitions into the Boulevard Princesse Grâce de Monaco) is the most leisurely and fun option. The stretch of road between Port Lympia and Palais Maeterlinck goes uphill, so I’d definitely recommend getting an e-bike to keep it light and fun. Y
Unfortunately, Villefranche-sur-Mer doesn’t participate in the popular e-bike-sharing programs Lime and Pony, which are super popular in Nice. So, to get to Villefranche-sur-Mer by bike, you’ll need to rent one for (half a) day from a specialized bike rental agency like this one. Expect to pay around €40 per bike per day.

6. On foot
If you have the luxury of time, then I strongly suggest walking from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer. The Sentier du Littoral, or coastal path, that wraps around the cape of Nice, is so beautiful. The entire walk takes 1.5 hours (or a bit longer to make the little detour to Plage de la Plateforme).
From Nice, make your way to the opposite side of Port Lympia and walk towards the coastline. The coastal trail starts at Coco Beach and ends at La Darse Beach in Villefranche-sur-Mer, but involves a 10-minute bypass via the road. The first part of the trail is rocky, and the second section is more of a dirt trail.
I love walking this trail on a sunny winter day when the air is crisp and the crowds are thin. Here’s a detailed overview of this gorgeous coastal walk:
Pros are the stunning views and the fact that it’s entirely free.
Cons are the fact that it’ll take you longer to get to Villefranche-sur-Mer and that this option is not suited for people with mobility issues or those traveling with toddlers. Plus, there’s no shade, especially on the first part of the trail. So, bring sunscreen, plenty of water, and a sun hat if you plan this hike in the summer.
Conclusion: Getting to Villefranche-sur-Mer from Nice on foot allows you to admire the magnificent coastal scenery along the coastal path.

There’s no direct ferry from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer. However, if you’re only staying in the area for a limited time and prefer combining several sightseeing spots to save time, then this boat tour from Nice is an excellent option.
It takes you along the stunning eastern coastline of the French Riviera to see the picturesque towns from a unique perspective. Admire the Mala Caves near Cap d’Ail and take a dip in the Mediterranean waters. You’ll cruise by Èze, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat before arriving in the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer. Embark and soak up the atmosphere for 45 minutes before you board and return to Nice.
