Villefranche-sur-Mer may be small, but its picturesque bay is home to some of the most stunning and inviting beaches on the French Riviera. I’ve visited this beautiful town many times, and it’s still one of my favorite places to spend a beach day.
With turquoise waters, gentle slopes, and a dramatic backdrop of colorful houses, Villefranche-sur-Mer’s beaches are a favorite for both locals and travelers looking for a more laid-back and family-friendly alternative to Nice.

My Top Picks
A quick word about beaches in Villefranche-sur-Mer
First and foremost, let’s get this clear: Contrary to what you may read elsewhere, all beaches in Villefranche-sur-Mer are pebbly (or at least gravelly) and not sandy. However, even though the beach surface itself is covered in pebbles like Nice’s beaches, some feature a sandy waterline that makes water entry much easier, especially for kids. On the other beaches, the pebbles tend to be smaller towards the waterline.
There’s only one private beach club in Villefranche-sur-Mer, situated on a small section of a public beach. All other beaches are completely public. That also means that the sun loungers in this beach club are highly coveted, which is why I strongly recommend reserving well in advance. You can book your beach chair here.
The bay is sheltered and the slopes are gentle, making the water calmer and slightly warmer than nearby towns. That’s why Villefranche-sur-Mer’s beaches are among the best beaches in the region for early and late-season swimming, when the water elsewhere is still too cold or has already cooled.

The best beaches in Villefranche-sur-Mer
Let’s explore the best beaches in Villefranche-sur-Mer, from lively stretches of sand to my favorite hidden gem (and – as you may know – that’s not a term that I use lightly).
1. Plage des Marinières
Plage des Marinières is the main beach in Villefranche-sur-Mer, stretching for 700 m (0.43 mi) from the base of the Old Town to the far side of the bay.
The section nearest the Old Town of Villefranche-sur-Mer is covered in gravel, while the eastern stretch has larger pebbles similar to those on Nice’s beaches. Along the waterline, however, you’ll find sand. Combined with the bay’s sheltered location and gentle slope, this makes Plage des Marinières one of the most family-friendly beaches on the French Riviera. The shallow, calm waters are especially safe for children.
There’s a single beach club, Marinières Plage, located on the gravel section close to town, perfect for a comfy lounger or a leisurely lunch with sweeping bay views.
Just steps from the beach, along the edge of the Old Town, you’ll find plenty of cafés, ice cream shops, and casual restaurants, making it easy to spend a full day here. At the western end, Parking des Marinières and the train station, located just above, make access especially convenient.
Plage des Marinières is one of my family’s alltime favorite beaches on the Côte d’Azur. The waters are shallow and warm, even early in the season, and the slope is sandy making it easy to get in and out. We usually hop on a bike from Nice and park it right behind the beach.
Best for:
Families, early and late-season swimming, easy access, and private beach club option.
Downsides:
Can get very crowded, pebbles can make it uncomfortable.

2. Plage de la Darse
Plage de la Darse lies on the opposite side of Villefranche’s bay, right next to the historic port and shipyard. It’s much smaller than Plage des Marinières and has a more local feel. Instead of sand, expect large pebbles and a rocky shoreline, so water shoes are highly recommended.
The clear, deep waters here are perfect for confident swimmers. There are no facilities on the beach itself, but its proximity to the port means you’ll find cafés and restaurants within walking distance.
Plage de la Darse is a bit tricky to access since it’s located further away from the train station and doesn’t have parking. The best option, if you’re coming from Nice, is to take the bus or to walk along the beautiful coastal path that wraps around the cape.
Best for:
Best for strong swimmers and snorkelers who prefer a quieter, more rugged spot away from the main beach.
Downsides:
Next to the bustling port, further away from the train station, no parking.

3. Plage de l’Ange Gardien
Plage de l’Ange Gardien is a small, pebbly beach located outside the Old Town, on the road towards Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Sheltered by the curve of the bay, it feels more tucked away than Plage des Marinières. The water here is calm, though the entry is steeper, so it’s better suited for older kids.
Beach club Casa Soleia sits at the southern end of this beach. It’s an idyllic spot to enjoy the beautiful scenery and indulge in fresh seafood.
You can access Plage de l’Ange Gardien via Plage des Marinières or, if you arrive by bus, descend via the small staircase. Guests of Casa Soleia can also opt for valet parking.
In the off-season, this beach can be tranquil. However, due to the proximity of the Pierre & Vacances vacation resort, it can get busy during the summer months. By the way, if you consider staying here, I’d recommend renting your unit that was recently refurbished – like this one – since the vast majority of units seem to be quite outdated.
Best for:
Away from the crowds, near the bus stop, private beach club option.
Downsides:
Gets busy in high season, small in size and only half of it is public, steeper slope.

4. Hidden beach of Rochambeau
This is a small patch of pebbles that I came across when walking the Sentier du Littoral from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer. To me, this spot is pure magic.
It may be too small to be called an actual beach, so much so that it doesn’t even seem to have an official name. But, for the sake of this article, let’s call it Plage de Rochambeau, after the neighborhood it borders. It’s located south of Plage de La Darse, so even further away from the train station and parking.
The area is located at the very spot of the historical quarantine center, where goods and people were once held before entering the Kingdom of Sardinia. In the 18th century, it was converted into an arsenal for building frigates. The small beach is located on the exact former construction site, bordered by two piers.
The beach is covered in pebbles that decrease in size as it slopes into the water. It’s the perfect place to lay down your towel and take an occasional dip. The yellow buoys mark the swimming zone, and you’ll notice that you can’t get in too deep before reaching them. There’s an anchorage zone for small boats right behind.
This area is perfect for snorkelers, with plenty of marine life visible close to the rocks towards the south.
Best for:
A quick dip or an individual snorkeling experience, away from the crowds.
Downsides:
Very small in size, not easily accessible.
