Èze Village vs Èze Bord de Mer
Before diving in, I want to clarify the difference between Èze Village and Èze Bord de Mer. This is important to get to where you want to be.
The town of Èze comprises two town centers: Èze Village is the walled medieval town that tops the mountain. It’s located along the Middle Corniche or Moyenne Corniche and overlooks the Mediterranean. Èze Bord de Mer is its laid-back coastal counterpart on the Low Corniche or Basse Corniche.
Both are connected by the Nietzsche Path, a steep hiking trail that follows the mountain slope.
Most visitors only ever visit Èze Village which is one of the top landmarks of the French Riviera and the focus of this article.
By the way, Èze is not the easiest word to pronounce for English speakers but you can do it! It should be pronounced as “ehzuh” and not as “ease”.
5 ways to get from Nice to Èze Village
You’ll see that getting from Nice to Èze is a breeze whichever option you choose. So, it’s more a matter of opting for the one that best fits your travel plans – whether you intend on renting a car or relying on public transportation – and the time you wish to set aside for your day trip.
Let’s zoom in on all the ways you can get from Nice to Èze.
1. By bus: The best way to get from Nice to Èze
Take Zou bus 602 or Lignes d’Azur bus 82 from stop “Bavastro” near Port Lympia in Nice to stop “Village” in Èze. Getting from Nice to Èze by bus takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
Pros are the scenic experience, the low cost of (€2.10 one-way for Zou and €1.70 for Lignes d’Azur), the fact that you’ll hop off right at the entrance of the hilltop village, and the possibility of a side-trip to Monaco (on the route of Zou bus 602).
Cons to taking the Nice to Èze bus are possible traffic and the fact the bus stops in Nice may not be located near your accommodation in Nice. To tackle that, opt for a hotel closer to Port Lympia, like Palais Ségurane Boutique Hotel, Mama Shelter Nice, or Nice Pam Hotel.
Conclusion: It takes just under 1 hour to get to Èze from Nice by bus and costs either €1.70 or €2.10 per person one-way.
4. By Uber, Bolt, or taxi
If you don’t have a car available but like the flexibility of the road, then you can rely on taxi services. The drive from Place Masséna in Nice takes 25 minutes without accounting for traffic, and the drive from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport takes just a few minutes longer (thanks to its proximity to the highway).
However, a taxi will cost you over €100 one-way which is pretty expensive.
A more wallet-friendly option is ride-sharing to get from Nice to Èze. Bolt is the go-to ride-sharing option on the French Riviera because it’s a bit cheaper than Uber. Just order your ride from the app and the driver will get you to the entrance of Èze Village.
A pro is the door-to-door service and the fact that you don’t need to worry about parking. A con can be the traffic so avoiding rush hour is recommended.
Conclusion: It takes 30 minutes to get to Èze from Nice by taxi or ride-share. Bolt is the cheapest alternative to reach Èze Village by road.
3. By car (self-drive)
If you have a car available in Nice, you can easily drive to Èze yourself. The drive along the highway, from reference point Place Masséna, takes 30 minutes without accounting for traffic. The scenic coastal road takes about 50 minutes. Both are free of tolls.
When it comes to car rental, I highly recommend Discover Cars with its wide selection of cars and agencies. The booking process is effortless and there’s an option to pay later that comes with free cancelation.
The car park is located at the entrance of Èze.
My last visit to this hilltop gem coincided with the Formula One Grand Prix in Monaco. After a day of watching the race, I was hoping to enjoy the golden hour at the Exotic Garden in Èze on my way back to Nice but already anticipated a stressful parking situation. It was the peak of the high season after all. Imagine my relief when I was able to park in the last available spot.
I haven’t always been so lucky finding parking in Èze. So, I’d definitely recommend reserving your parking spot. You can do so on this website.
Pros are the flexibility in schedule and the liberty to add other destinations like Èze Bor de Mer, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, and even Monaco or Menton to your day trip itinerary.
Cons are the cost of parking, the traffic, and the need to look for a parking spot.
Conclusion: It takes 30 minutes to get to Èze from Nice by car (20 minutes more if you take the scenic coastal route) and parking can be hard to find during high season.
4. By train + bus/hike/ride-share
Nice-Ville is the train station closest to the city center of Nice. The train ride on the Regional Express Train (TER) from Nice-Ville to Èze train station takes just 15 minutes.
You can also take the train from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. From there, you need to proceed to the Nice Saint-Augustin train station to catch a TER. You’ll get to Èze in under 25 minutes.
The Nice-Ville train station may not be located near your accommodation in Nice. To tackle that, opt for a hotel closer to the station, like Hôtel Apollinaire, Hotel Florence, and Aparthotel AMMI Nice Lafayette.
The biggest obstacle is that the Èze train station is located on the coast as its name Èze-sur-Mer suggests. That’s on the Lower Corniche or Basse Corniche. So, you’ll need another mode of transport to continue your way to its hilltop counterpart on the Middle Corniche or Moyenne Corniche.
There are three options:
Pros to getting from Nice to Èze by train are the scenic ride along the French Mediterranean coast and the low cost of €5 one-way.
Cons are that the train will only bring you halfway and you need a second mode of transport to reach Èze Village and that evening rush hour trains get packed with commuters heading home from Monaco to Nice. You might end up waiting for a few trains before you can squeeze in. So, try to travel outside of rush hour.
Conclusion: Èze Village can not be reached by train directly. You’ll have to continue your journey from the Èze-sur-Mer train station by bus, ride-share, or on foot.
5. By tour (minivan)
If you prefer a guided visit to Èze that includes transportation, then an excursion is the way to go. You’ll be driving to and from the hilltop town in a minivan accompanied by a tour guide and other travelers.
The only thing is that, since Èze is pretty compact, all excursions combine it with another French Riviera destination, mostly Monaco because it’s located on the same route. A tour costs around €100 per person.
There are several options available from Nice but this is the one I’d choose. It offers a carefree way to visit both Èze and Monaco in a small group with an attentive guide. The glowing reviews speak for themselves.
Pros are the hotel pick-up, the flexible cancelation conditions, the small group, and the proximity of a guide. Cons are the tight schedule, the cost, and the fact that you have no option but to visit Monaco too even if that wasn’t part of your travel plan.
