How to get from Nice to Cannes

The fastest way to reach Cannes from Nice is by regional train (TER). The journey from Nice-Ville station takes around 35 minutes, and trains run frequently throughout the day, making it easy to visit without planning.

From Cannes station, it’s a 10-minute walk to the Old Port and the Croisette, making it one of the easiest day trips from Nice.

Driving is another option and takes about 30 minutes via the A8 or 40 minutes via the coastal road. Parking can be very hard to come by near the center in summer, so arriving early is recommended.

Best time to visit Cannes

Cannes enjoys the same sunny Mediterranean climate as the rest of the French Riviera, making it a pleasant destination year-round.

  • Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal for sightseeing. Temperatures are comfortable, the Croisette terraces are lively, and the Old Town is pleasant to explore without the intense summer heat.

    One notable exception is May, when the Cannes Film Festival brings international attention, heavy crowds, and limited accommodation availability. It may be alluring to plan a day trip at this time, but other than celebrity spotting, there’s not much to do. Restaurants are booked out, parking is hopeless, and all events are invitation-only.
  • Summer (July–August) is the busiest season. The beaches are at their best, and the town has a vibrant holiday atmosphere, but expect larger crowds and higher prices.
  • Winter (November–March) is much quieter, though the seafront remains pleasant for walks.

One Day in Cannes: Suggested Day Trip Itinerary

Before diving into the details, here’s how to structure your one day in Cannes. The city works equally well as a half-day visit focused on the Old Town, or as a full day combining sightseeing, beaches, and island excursions.

Morning (core half-day)

  • Start your visit in Le Suquet, the historic Old Town perched above the harbor.
  • Wander up the narrow lanes toward the Église Notre-Dame d’Espérance, a hilltop church offering beautiful views over the port and the bay. From here, you can see the red-roofed Old Town, the marina, and the long curve of the Croisette.
  • After descending the hill, make your way to Marché Forville, one of the most famous markets on the French Riviera. Locals shop here for fresh produce, cheeses, seafood, and Provençal specialties.
  • Continue toward the Old Port or Vieux Port, where fishing boats sit alongside luxury yachts, and then walk toward the Palais des Festivals, home of the world-famous film festival. Strike a pose on the red carpet or spot the handprints of your favorite movie stars at de Chemin des Étoiles (Cannes’ Walk of Fame).

Lunch

For lunch, you have several good options nearby.

  • You can pick up local delicacies at Marché Forville and assemble a quick picnic.
  • Or, settle into one of the harbor-side restaurants overlooking the Vieux Port. Marea, the restaurant of the Canopy by Hilton Cannes, is one of my personal favorites with views that are hard to beat!
  • Another classic option is to enjoy the ambience of one of the beach clubs along the Croisette for a relaxed seaside dining experience.

Afternoon options

  • Option A – Croisette & beach: Stroll the iconic Boulevard de la Croisette, the palm-lined promenade running along Cannes’ seafront. You’ll pass grand hotels, designer boutiques, and several public beaches where you can relax for a swim. Or why not splurge on a sunbed at one of the exclusive beach clubs of Cannes?
  • Option B – Île Sainte-Marguerite: If you prefer nature and history, take the short ferry to Île Sainte-Marguerite, the largest of the Lérins Islands just off the coast. The island offers pine forests, quiet coves, and the historic Fort Royal, once home to the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask. Pack your snorkel gear if you want to explore the underwater museum too!     If you prefer to explore more intimately, you can also join a small-group boat tour or book a private boat tour from the harbor and circle the nearby Îles de Lérins or cruise along the coast to the red cliffs of the Massif de l’Estérel.
  • Option C – Shopping & museums: Return to the town center and explore the boutiques around Rue d’Antibes, Cannes’ main shopping street. Evening (optional)

If you stay until evening, enjoy an apéro along the Croisette as the sunset colors the bay. Trains back to Nice run late enough to allow a relaxed dinner before returning. If you’re looking to explore the nightlife, then you can always get a ride-share back to Nice.

  • Enjoy an apéro by the water as the pastel façades glow in the sunset or head for cocktails at La Belle Époque.
  • Indulge in the freshest seafood at Astoux & Brun, a personal favorite. Or, opt for one of the exclusive restaurants like La Petite Maison, Salama, or Le Bâoli (just know that these spots attract a glamorous crowd; the bill, and occasionally the suggested tip, are known to reflect the setting).
  • End the evening with live music at the jazzy Le Speakeasy or dance the night away at Le Bâoli.

Visiting Cannes from a cruise ship

Cannes is also a popular cruise stop on Mediterranean itineraries, and it’s one of the easiest ports on the French Riviera to explore independently.

Where cruise ships anchor

Unlike some ports on the French Riviera, cruise ships rarely dock directly in the harbor in Cannes.

Most vessels anchor offshore, and passengers reach land by tender boat. The tender ride usually takes 10–15 minutes and drops you near the Palais des Festivals, right in the center of town.

Some tenders also use Quai Laubeuf, close to the ferry departures for the Lérins Islands.

Either way, you step ashore directly in the main tourist district, surrounded by restaurants, cafés, and the Croisette promenade.

What fits in a 4–5 hour cruise stop

If your ship only stays a few hours, focus on the essentials:

  • Walk through Le Suquet Old Town.
  • Visit Marché Forville.
