Places to stay: My Top Picks
I hardly ever take the time to go shopping when I’m at home. I dislike it so much that I even try to put it off as much as possible. But that changes when I’m on holiday. Oh, how I love browsing the shops when I’m in vacation mode! I just can’t resist the allure of finding local delicacies or discovering new fashion brands.
Finding the time to squeeze in some shopping may be challenging when you only spend a day in Nice. However, if you’re spending (more than) three days in Nice, I’d strongly recommend hitting the shops in Nice. I’ll soon be writing an article on the best souvenirs to buy in Nice so you know exactly what to buy.
Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll likely find it in Nice. Save an unsuccessful search for sandals for my daughter, who was 12 at the time, I’ve always been able to check off all items on my shopping list.
The French value politeness and that goes for the shopping culture too. So, before entering any store, greet shopkeepers with a warm “Bonjour, Monsieur / Madame” and conclude transactions with a sincere “Merci”.
Fun fact: I love the French term for window-shopping – “faire du lèche-vitrine” – which literally translates as window-licking.
Where to go shopping in Nice
The city’s shopping zones are predominantly pedestrian-friendly, allowing for a leisurely shopping experience. With cozy cafés on every street corner, there are plenty of opportunities to take a break too. Shopping in France is more than trailing around the shops, after all, it’s part of the social culture.
When it comes to shopping in Nice, the offer is dazzling and diverse. And, because the city center of Nice is pretty compact, you can easily combine different shopping experiences in one outing.

Markets in Nice
No better place to experience the authentic soul of Nice than at one of the markets. Whether you’re looking for fresh produce for a beach picnic or hunting for an intriguing antique object to take home, you’ll find your pick at one of the markets in Nice.
Cours Saleya market
Cours Saleya in the Old Town of Nice represents the quintessential Provençal market experience. This vibrant marketplace bursts with fragrant produce, local crafts, and colorful flowers from Tuesday to Sunday morning. It’s one of the top attractions in Nice.
On Monday, an antique market is held instead, and on summer nights, this picture-perfect square transforms into an artisanal market with an array of souvenirs, jewelry, and handcrafts on display.
The market in the heart of Nice is my favorite place to start the day. I love settling into one of the terraces lining Cours Saleya just to soak up the vibrant atmosphere in full color.
Libération market
The Libération Market offers a more local, less touristy shopping environment. Operating on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings, it provides the opportunity to experience authentic Nice shopping culture. Here, you can find fresh produce, regional specialties, and everyday items.
Flea market
The flea market in Nice is called Les Puces de Nice, also known as the Marché au Puces. Unsurprisingly, you can find it in the Port area which also houses the Antiquarians’ District. The flea market is open from Tuesday to Saturday during the daytime.
Whether you’re a treasure hunter or a vintage enthusiast, here’s where you’ll find an eclectic mix of antiques, unique souvenirs, and unexpected finds. The street art that adorns the walls adds to its charm.
More markets
Once or twice a month, on a Sunday, you can browse the eclectic offer of art, toys, decorations, and handmade goods at the Nice Garibaldi Artisanal Market. Check the dates on this page.
Twice a month, on the first and third Saturday, the square in front of the Palace of Justice transforms into an open-air bookshop.
Boutiques in Nice
Boutiques are my favorite kind of shopping, especially when on holidays. Exploring local brands and products often results in finding the most original gifts for friends and family back home.
Note that some boutiques may be closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Carré d’Or
The Carré d’Or or Golden Square is Nice’s epicenter of elegance and sophistication. Rue Paradis, Rue Longchamp, Rue de la Liberté, and Rue Alphonse Karr are where to find high-end fashion boutiques and designer stores, offering a curated shopping experience for those seeking luxury and style.
Jean Médecin
Avenue Jean Médecin is a modern shopping boulevard that combines international brands with local retailers. Wide sidewalks and a pedestrian-friendly design make this street a central shopping destination.
Vieux Nice
Vieux Nice (Old Town) presents a contrasting shopping environment with narrow streets hosting artisan shops. These intimate spaces showcase local crafts, unique gifts, independent fashion, and products that can’t be found elsewhere.
Department stores or shopping malls in Nice
In addition to the boutiques, Nice is also home to some amazing shopping malls. These provide a wonderful break from the summer sun or the wintry cold. Plus, these are about the only shops to be open on Sundays.
Tip: French Riviera Pass holders get a gift in all the shopping malls. You can find more information about this tourist card and the free access and reductions it includes on the official page.
Galeries Lafayette Nice Masséna
Galeries Lafayette on Avenue Jean Médecin exemplifies the classic French department store experience, offering designer brands and luxury goods.
An overview of all available brands can be found here.
Nice Étoile
This modern shopping center is located on the same Avenue Jean Médecin, steps away from Galeries Lafayette in the direction of the Nice-Ville train station.
An overview of all available brands can be found here.
Cap 3000 (+ Galeries Lafayette Cap 3000)
Cap 3000 represents one of the region’s largest shopping complexes. It’s located right next to Nice – Côte d’Azur Airport. It’s the perfect excuse to head to the airport wayyyyy ahead of your scheduled flight time.
Tip: Make sure to head to the reception desk with your international passport to pick up a shopping pass that includes discounts and special treats at several shops (including the Galeries Lafayette department store).
An overview of all available brands can be found here.
Annual sales and shopping events in Nice
Nice follows the traditional French four weekslong sales periods. The discounts usually start at around 30-40 percent and climb towards 70 percent in the final days of the sales periods.
Here’s when to score a deal:
Every year in the second half of September, there’s also La Grande Braderie. This 3-day shopping event features widespread discounts and street performances that transform retail into a festive experience. The exact dates are announced on this page which also features a map indicating all participating shops.
There’s a similar 3-day shopping event called Nice Carnaval Days that takes place during the final days of the Carnival in Nice.
Tax refunds for international shoppers
For non-European Union visitors and European visitors residing outside the European Union, France offers an attractive tax refund system that can significantly reduce shopping expenses. That refund ranges between 12 to 14.5 percent of the original VAT amount.
Not all retailers participate in this service but most do and only purchases over €100.01 in a single store (or a combined amount in a shopping mall) qualify. Be sure to present your passport in the shop before settling the payment so the cashier can provide you with a tax refund form.
Keep both this form and the original receipt. Also, keep the items unworn or unused with original tags.
If Nice is the last destination of your European trip, then you can get your tax refunded in the shopping malls (for the items purchased there) or at the Nice – Côte d’Azur airport. At the airport, there are self-service kiosks with a so-called PABLO system to arrange the refund.
Detailed information can be found on the official website of the French Customs Service.
