Why Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat Beaches Are So Special
Set apart from the busier resort towns nearby, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat’s beaches feel more intimate and natural. Most are tucked into small bays surrounded by pine forest, offering clear, calm water and a peaceful atmosphere even in summer.
The peninsula’s unique shape shelters it from strong winds and swells, making it one of the best swimming spots near Nice. The transparent waters also make it one of my all-time favorite places on the French Riviera to go snorkeling.
Unlike Nice’s pebble shores, the beaches in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat are smaller coves of fine gravel or mixed sand, with views of the cliffs of Èze and Beaulieu-sur-Mer on one side and a panorama over the Bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer on the other side.
It’s a place where luxury villas sit quietly behind old stone walls, and every path seems to lead to another hidden cove, a true contrast to the city beaches just a few kilometres away.
Public and Private Beaches in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat
All of the beaches in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat are free and open to all, with a few seasonal lifeguards in summer. However, two of those beaches have a private section:

Best Beaches in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat
Let’s explore Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat’s beaches, from lively stretches of soft sand near the port to the clear waters near the Pointe Saint-Hospice.
1. Plage de la Scaletta – Paloma Beach
On the peninsula’s eastern tip, Plage de la Scaletta sits in a deep natural bay facing the cliffs of Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Èze. This east-facing cove is bathed in morning light and surrounded by lush greenery.
The beach itself is a mix of pebbles and coarse sand, making it perfect for swimming. This beach was once home to the iconic Paloma Beach Club and is still better known under that name. My favorite part is the little pocket on the southern end of the beach, right under the stately villa overlooking the bay.
Plage de la Scaletta is a French Riviera classic that never disappoints. As the trailhead of the Saint-Hospice coastal path, it’s also perfect for combining beach time with a scenic walk.
Best for:
Iconic scenery, sunrise photos, elegant vibe, those seeking natural shade on a hot summer afternoon, private beach option.
Downsides:
Crowded in high season, chilly during the shoulder season due to the natural shade.
2. Plage des Fossettes – Best for snorkeling
Plage des Fossettes sits in a small, sheltered cove that feels far removed from the busier French Riviera beaches. There are no facilities or lifeguards, but that’s part of the appeal: Fossettes feels untouched, framed by pine trees and backed by the quiet curve of the coastal path.
The water here is exceptionally clear, revealing a mosaic of sand, rocks, and seagrass meadows, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling. Plage des Fossettes is also the starting point of the Sentier Sous-Marin, an underwater trail marked by buoys with information panels about the local marine life.
Above the cove, the snack bar La Pointe du Cap Ferrat (open only in high season) has a naturally shaded patio with stunning views over the Mediterranean. It’s one of my favorite spots to unwind and take in the peninsula’s natural beauty.

Snorkeling, clear water, natural setting.
Downsides:
No amenities, rocky seabed.
3. Plage des Fosses – At the edge of the coastal path’s wildest stretch
Just north of Les Fossettes, Plage des Fosses feels calm and residential, yet it marks the point where a section of one of the most scenic French Riviera’s coastal paths begins to reveal its wilder side. It’s a pleasant stop if you’re coming from the Pointe Saint-Hospice.
This gravel beach is one of the most tranquil public spots on the peninsula for swimming or sunbathing. The sea here is shallow and clear, making it perfect for snorkeling, while the gentle slope is ideal for relaxed swims. A line of Belle Époque villas overlooks the bay, giving the place a quiet, timeless charm.
Best for:
Calm atmosphere, easy swimming, snorkeling, coastal path access.
Downsides:
Very limited parking, little shade by early afternoon, no lifeguard on duty in summer, no facilities (except for a shower).
4. Plage de Passable – Best for sunsets
Facing Villefranche-sur-Mer, Plage de Passable lies on the peninsula’s western shore and offers postcard views of the bay. Thanks to its western orientation, it’s one of my favorite spots on the peninsula to spend a lazy late afternoon or to watch the sunset after dinner.
The beach is covered in fine pebbles, and the water stays shallow for several meters, making it ideal for children and relaxed swims. Thanks to its dedicated parking lot and bus stop, it’s one of the most accessible beaches in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. The Passable Beach Club occupies one side and offers valet service.
Best for:
Families, gentle swimming, bay views, spectacular sunsets, private beach option, accessibility.
Downsides:
Parking fills up quickly, gets very busy during the summer months, limited natural shade.
5. Plage Cros deï Pin (Plage du Port) – Best for families
At the heart of the village, near the port, shops, bus stop, and with its own parking lot, Cros deï Pin is the most convenient beach in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. It’s not as pristine as the peninsula’s smaller coves, but its location makes it unbeatable for a quick swim after exploring.
The beach consists of fine gravel, and the sea is shallow and calm, perfect for families. It has lifeguards in summer, a playground, a beach volleyball court, and a small kiosk for drinks and snacks. Dogs are allowed on one section of the beach.
During my last visit, there was some litter washed in from the yachts, a reminder of how fragile these beautiful coves are.
