1. Marvel at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and its iconic gardens

No visit to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is complete without exploring the magnificent Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, the pink-hued Florentine-Venetian palace that crowns the peninsula. Built in the early 1900s for Baroness Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, this remarkable estate offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the French Riviera’s elite during the Belle Époque.
The Baroness, an avid socialite and art collector, left the villa, gardens, and more than 5,000 artworks to the Académie des Beaux-Arts (Academy of Fine Arts). Today, the collection showcases her exquisite taste, from Sèvres porcelain and Gobelins tapestries to paintings by the Old Masters.
Set on a narrow ridge between the bays of Villefranche-sur-Mer and Beaulieu-sur-Mer, the villa offers breathtaking views on both sides.
The true highlight for many visitors, myself included, is the nine meticulously designed gardens, each inspired by the Baroness’s world travels: the formal French Garden with its musical fountains, the tranquil Japanese Garden, the terraced Florentine Garden, and the fragrant Rose Garden, to name a few.
Insider tip: Visit early morning to enjoy cooler air and quieter paths. Allow at least two to three hours to explore both the villa’s interior and its exquisite gardens. It’s open year-round, and you can find the opening times here.
My absolute favorite garden is the fragrant Rose Garden with its sprawling bay vistas. Even after multiple visits, it still leaves me speechless.
2. Relax on the beautiful beaches of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is blessed with a handful of scenic beaches, the most famous being Scaletta Beach, tucked into a sheltered cove on the peninsula’s eastern side. This picturesque beach offers turquoise waters framed by pine trees and elegant villas.
Also known as Paloma Beach, named after the former beach club located here, it’s one of the most coveted private beaches on the French Riviera.
Beyond Scaletta Bay, you’ll find several inviting alternatives: Plage des Fossettes – home to an underwater snorkel trail – and Plage de Passable, which faces Villefranche-sur-Mer and catches the afternoon sun. Avoid Cros dei Pin near the marina since, in my experience, sometimes suffers from litter. For an overview of all of the peninsula’s hidden coves and public stretches, check out my guide to the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat beaches.
Insider tip: In July and August, arrive early to claim a good spot. For fewer crowds and warm seas, June and September are ideal.
3. Hike around the Cape along the Sentier du Littoral or Coastal Path

One of my absolute favorite free things to do in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is walking the 8-kilometer (5-mile) scenic Cap Ferrat coastal path that circles almost the entire peninsula. It’s one of the most beautiful seaside trails on the French Riviera, part of the larger Sentier du Littoral network, with continuous views of the Mediterranean and glimpses of some of Europe’s most exclusive villas.
The full loop takes about 2.5–3 hours, but you can divide it into three sections. The first, from Hôtel Royal-Riviera to the Port de Saint-Jean, is short and easy. The second loops around Pointe Saint-Hospice, climbing gently toward the 11th-century chapel and its bronze Madonna statue. The final, longest stretch hugs the cape beneath the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat and its Club Dauphin pool, passes the lighthouse, and ends at Plage de Passable.
The walk’s magic lies in its contrasts: wild cliffs, pine groves, and unobstructed sea views on one side, manicured gardens and stately homes on the other.
4. Visit the Saint-Hospice Chapel and its panoramic viewpoint

Tucked on the quiet eastern tip of the peninsula, the Saint-Hospice Chapel is one of Cap Ferrat’s most peaceful landmarks. The small 11th-century chapel sits among cypress trees overlooking the Mediterranean, with a bronze Madonna and Child statue keeping watch over the bay.
A maritime cemetery surrounds it, a moving reminder of the peninsula’s long seafaring history. The short detour from the coastal path is well worth it for the sweeping views of Beaulieu-sur-Mer and the open sea, especially in the late afternoon light.
5. Wander the chic streets of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat

The heart of village life centers around the Port de Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat along Allari Quay and the lively Clemenceau Square above it. Built in the mid-1800s, the marina accommodates hundreds of boats and is lined with cafés, boutiques, and restaurants overlooking the water.

Stop at La Civette for homemade ice cream, then wander through the handful of streets dotted with bakeries and small shops. Notable sights include the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste (Church of Saint-John the Baptist), dating back to the 11th century, and the Musée des Coquillages, which houses an impressive shell collection (but is currently closed for renovations).

The port’s seafront terraces are perfect for a relaxed meal. This is also where you’ll find the best restaurants at Port de Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, ideal for a long lunch in the sun.
6. Discover the “Tattooed” Villa Santo Sospir
The Villa Santo Sospir offers a completely different experience from Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. Built in the 1930s, it gained fame when artist Jean Cocteau, a frequent guest of owner Francine Weisweiller, began decorating its walls during the 1950s.
What started as a single sketch above the fireplace evolved into a full transformation. Encouraged by friends Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, Cocteau “tattooed” the villa’s walls, doors, and even furniture with mythological scenes using a fresco technique known as tempera. Hence its nickname, the Tattooed Villa.
After a meticulous restoration, Villa Santo Sospir reopened for guided visits. Tours are available on request and offer an intimate look into Cocteau’s creative universe. Requests can be made directly through the official website.
7. Explore the underwater world on a snorkel adventure

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat’s crystalline waters aren’t just beautiful to look at; they’re also perfect for exploring below the water surface. The Sentier Sous-Marin (Underwater Trail) at Plage des Fossettes guides snorkelers past buoys that mark a series of underwater panels explaining local marine life.
For a deeper experience, join this guided snorkel-scooter tour led by a professional freediving instructor, departing from Plage de Passable.
Insider tip: Go early in the morning when the sea is calm and visibility is at its best. Bring a waterproof camera to capture the underwater scenery.
8. Savor seafood at the lively Port of Saint-Jean

For the best dining experience, head to Clemenceau Square, where you’ll find several port-side restaurants.
My favorite here is Mademoiselle, where beautifully prepared seafood is served either on the ground-floor brasserie terrace — perfect for people-watching — or in the elegant upstairs dining room with harbor views. The ingredients are locally sourced, many from the restaurant’s own garden, giving each dish a fresh, Mediterranean flavor.

While nightlife is minimal, dining by the sea is one of the most enjoyable things to do in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat at night. With the port at its most atmospheric once the yachts light up the water, evenings on the peninsula are calm and intimate.

After dinner, enjoy a quiet stroll along the quayside or linger over a glass of wine, simple pleasures that capture the essence of Côte d’Azur evenings.
9. Take a sunset boat tour along the coast
Seeing Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat from the water is a true highlight, especially during golden hour. This sunset cruise from Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat offers a front-row seat to the peninsula’s cliffs, villas, and gardens as the light softens.
This private two-hour cruise traces the Riviera shoreline past Villefranche-sur-Mer and the cliffs of Èze-Village, revealing secluded coves and seaside estates hidden from land. It’s an unforgettable way to end your visit.
Insider tip: Book at least a day in advance, especially in summer, and bring a light jacket for the breeze.
