March and April are part of the shoulder season on the French Riviera, but that changes in May. While the first half of the month is still quiet, the second half of May is considered peak season.

In terms of spring temperatures, the average lows range from 8.5°C (47°F) to 14.5°C (58°F) while the average highs range from 15°C (59°F) to 21°C (70°F).
On average, there are 5 rainy days in March, 6.5 in April, and 5 in May. A rainy day here and then may occur, but don’t let that spoil the fun.
Pros and cons of visiting the French Riviera in spring
If you have the flexibility to make it work, then spring is one of the best times to visit the French Riviera. It’s great for honeymoons, babymoons, and other couples’ retreats, but also for active holidays that include hiking and cycling.
The weather is mild, flowers are blooming, and landscapes are at their lushest. It’s prime time for visiting the French Riviera gardens. The seawater may be too cold for swimming, but lazing on the beach is certainly doable.
Late April through the first half of May is the window I point most of my own family and readers toward: the gardens are at their best, hiking trails aren’t yet baking in the heat, beach clubs are opening for the season, and you’ll still get restaurant tables and tour slots without booking weeks out.
Events in the spring season
Two major events take place on the French Riviera during the spring season: the Cannes Film Festival from mid-May onwards and the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix in the first weekend of June. Another event that may impact availability is the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity that takes place at the end of June.
These exclusive gatherings are complemented by numerous soirées and private parties, attracting celebrities and high rollers to the French Riviera. Needless to say, prices tend to skyrocket during that time.
Spring travel tips
Traveling during the shoulder season gives you the advantage of spontaneity. Hotels often have last-minute availability, restaurants are happy to take walk-ins, and travel on public transport is pretty relaxed.
If you happen to visit the French Riviera during the hallmark events, then book your hotel or apartment and even your restaurants way beforehand. The crowds aren’t that noticeable during the day – the beaches beyond Cannes are not particularly more crowded – but they are during the evening and the night.

Pros and cons of visiting the French Riviera in summer
French holidaymakers and visitors from across Europe flock to the Côte d’Azur for their classic summer getaways. The crowds are at their worst between mid-July and mid-August. Especially during the weekends, the highway between Lyon and the French Riviera, known as the Route du Soleil, gets completely congested.
The sun-drenched Mediterranean beaches are crowded, the restaurants are fully booked, and hotel prices are at their highest, with hardly any last-minute availability. And, while public transportation throughout the French Riviera is usually very efficient, trains to and from popular destinations can be completely packed.
Events in the summer season
Jazz lovers, rejoice! Two major jazz events take place in the French Riviera during the summer: In July, there’s Jazz à Juan in Juan-les-Pins near Antibes, and in August, there’s Nice Jazz Fest in Nice.
You can also attend the array of local summer festivals in many towns across the Riviera.
Summer travel tips
As for any trip, it’s best to avoid the high season. Of course, that’s easier said than done, especially when planning a family trip to the French Riviera.
If you have no choice but to visit the French Riviera during the summer season, then try to avoid mid-July to mid-August and aim to visit from late June to early July. That’s how I make it work.
Thankfully, schools in Belgium wrap up at the end of June, giving my family and me a head start on summer vacation compared to France and most other European countries. It tends to be a little easier on the wallet, too. And, since we travel with two teenage girls and usually require two rooms, that’s a win in my book.
Many Europeans return to the same accommodation year after year, so be prepared to book your hotel or villa rental on the French Riviera way ahead to score the best deal. And that goes for anything. The best way to tackle the summer season is to plan ahead and even reserve restaurants and beach clubs beforehand.

September, October, and November make up the shoulder season on the French Riviera, with one exception.

Pros and cons of visiting the French Riviera in fall
If you have the flexibility to make it work, then early fall is one of the best times to visit the French Riviera. Early October is the exact stretch I keep coming back to myself: the swimming window has mostly closed, but you get comfortable temperatures for exploring on foot, thin crowds at the major sights, and accommodation rates already well off their summer peak.
You get to combine an occasional dip in the warm Mediterranean waters with sightseeing, seaside walks, and cultural explorations. The weather is mild, the crowds are thin, and nature is in transformation.
Autumn is an exceptionally inviting time of year to visit the local vineyards that produce the famous Côtes de Provence rosé wines.
Events in the fall season
There’s one peak moment for tourism in fall, and that’s during the Cannes Yachting Festival, which takes place around mid-September. But that’s only for Cannes; you won’t notice much of it in Nice or any of the other French Riviera hotspots.
A sailing event – Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez – occurs in Saint-Tropez at the end of September and the beginning of October, but this will only affect the crowds and accommodation prices in the direct vicinity of Saint-Tropez.
Fréjus, Sainte-Maxime, and the inland town of Roquebrune-sur-Argens host the yearly Roc d’Azur outdoor sports event for five days in October. It includes mountain biking, trail running, and triathlon competitions. More than 20,000 participants took part in the 2025 edition.
Fall travel tips
Autumn trips offer more flexibility. You can often book hotel rooms on short notice, dine at restaurants without reservations, and enjoy less crowded public transportation.
Especially from October onwards, rain is to be expected, so be sure to include some rainy-day activities in your French Riviera itinerary. Nice remains my go-to travel base for this shoulder season too: its wide variety of museums gives you an easy rainy-day plan B, and it keeps you within easy reach of every other French Riviera town.

December, January, and February make up the low season on the French Riviera.

Originally, the French Riviera was a winter retreat for the British upper class, but it gradually became a spring and summer destination. Yet, with temperatures on the rise, the French Riviera is regaining popularity as a year-round destination.
Add to that the array of winter events, and you can look forward to a delightful winter getaway.
Important to note, however, is that most French Riviera beach hotels close over the winter to reopen in spring.

Hop from one French Riviera Christmas market to another, celebrate the Lemon Festival in Menton, and go wild during the Nice Carnival. Another highlight is the Route du Mimosa, a gorgeous road trip that traces the yellow flower blossoms from Bormes-les-Mimosas to Grasse.
