Spring is considered one of the best times to explore Nice. This season is ideal for honeymoons, babymoons, and couples’ getaways, as well as for active holidays that include exploring the French Riviera’s coastal trails, cycling along the Corniche roads, or hiking in the mountains.
With mild weather, blooming flowers, and lush landscapes, it’s a prime time to visit the exquisite city parks and gardens. While the seawater may still be too chilly for swimming, leisurely beach lounging is definitely an enjoyable option. And if your hotel in Nice happens to come with a heated pool, then you might take that dip after all.
Late April through mid-May is actually one of my favorite windows within the season. The crowds haven’t arrived yet, but everything above is still fully in swing, and you’ll have a much easier time booking restaurants and tours than you would even a few weeks later.
In spring, two major events take place on the French Riviera: From mid-May onwards, there’s the 12-day-long Cannes Film Festival, while in the first weekend of June, Monaco hosts the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Still, if your visit to Nice happens to coincide with these seasonal events, then I’d strongly recommend booking both your accommodations and restaurants wayyyyy in advance. While crowds may not be overly noticeable during the day, evenings and nights can be quite busy in these areas.

June, July, and August make up the high season in Nice.
Booking your accommodations in advance is highly recommended. Even some popular restaurants tend to book out early so, if you’re keen on dining at a particular restaurant, consider making reservations there too.

Pros and cons of visiting Nice in summer
Many French people spend their vacation domestically. Brittany, Occitanie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and the Côte d’Azur are among their top summer destinations. French school holidays start in early to mid-July and end in early September. Mid-July to mid-August is when most French hit the road towards their summer retreat, so traveling through France during these weekends might mean dealing with traffic jams.
As with any trip, avoiding the high season is ideal, but not always possible for family vacations in Nice. If summer is your only option, aim for late June to early July to beat the crowds that peak from mid-July onwards.
This strategy works well for me, as schools in Belgium finish at the end of June, giving my family a head start on summer vacation compared to France and other European countries. It’s usually easier on the budget, too, and that’s a bonus when traveling with two teens and needing two rooms.
The Côte d’Azur is a popular summer destination for many Europeans, with some visitors returning to their favorite Nice hotels and Airbnbs year after year. Ensure you book well in advance to secure the best deal.

Early fall is another amazing time to visit Nice. You can enjoy the warm Mediterranean waters alongside sightseeing, cultural activities, and active jaunts. While a couple of sailing events take place on the French Riviera in the second half of September, visitors to these regattas don’t tend to stay in Nice. As a result, the accommodation rates are mainly affected by local events.
Late autumn brings mild weather, fewer crowds, and vibrant foliage, making it an ideal season to explore some of the vineyards near Nice, go on a scenic road trip, or take day trips from Nice to other French Riviera destinations.
Early October is another one of my go-to picks. The swimming window has mostly closed by then, but the trade-off is worth it: comfortable temperatures for exploring on foot, thinner crowds at the major sights, and accommodation rates that are already easing off their summer peak. Especially from mid-October onwards, accommodation rates in Nice are reasonable.

December, January, and February make up the low season in Nice. Just like anywhere else, the busiest time of the winter season coincides with the Nice Christmas Market.

Thanks to rising global temperatures and the variety of winter events in Nice, this Mediterranean gem is well on its way to reclaiming its status as a year-round destination.
I love Nice as a winter getaway destination because it allows me to actively explore the city and its surroundings without breaking a sweat. Cycling down the Promenade des Anglais, walking from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer, walking up to Cimiez on foot, and taking the time to take in all the beauty along the way. Winter may just be the best time of year to visit Nice, France, thanks to the many festivities taking place. Unlike a lot of winter destinations where everything slows to a crawl, Nice stays genuinely lively: December brings the Christmas market and its giant Ferris wheel, and February belongs to the Carnaval, one of the biggest events on the French Riviera’s calendar. January and March, by contrast, are quiet, so if you’re after a slower pace, aim for one of those months instead. While sunbathing may not be an option in Nice in winter, the mix of cultural experiences and active adventures will give you plenty to look forward to.
