The fastest way is to drive. Just note that parking your car might be a bit tricky in peak summer, especially if you hope to avoid the very expensive parking at the entrance of the village. Taking a ride-share costs around €40 one-way, and a taxi costs about double.

If you prefer public transport, you can take either a train or a bus from Nice to Cagnes-sur-Mer. From there, you transfer to the Zou bus line 655 to Saint-Paul de Vence. The total route would take around 1 hour, depending on the connection.

Best time to visit Saint-Paul de Vence

Timing matters more here than people expect.

  • Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer the best balance of mild weather and manageable crowds due to fewer tour groups.
  • Summer (July–August) can get very busy, and timing can make a huge difference. If possible, aim to arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Keep in mind that shops and galleries close at 6 or 7 pm. so arrive well before closure for the optimal experience. I find that 4.30 pm is the sweet spot for the most atmospheric experience.
  • Winter (November–March) is quiet and perfect to see the sights. However, some shops, boutiques, and restaurants close from mid-November to mid-December and/or in January.

The itinerary below outlines a comfortable half-day visit that covers the main highlights without rushing. It’s especially suited for a morning visit from Nice, leaving the rest of the day open for another nearby destination or a leisurely lunch. If it fits your schedule better, the same route works just as well in the afternoon.

  • Explore Rue Grande and its narrow streets, shops, and art galleries.

Prefer to slow down? Stay longer by adding the following activities. This turns Saint-Paul de Vence into a relaxed ~5-6 hour day, without feeling stretched.

  • Long lunch inside the village. If you’re an art lover, see if you can get reservations at the highly coveted La Colombe d’Or, where artists like Matisse, Chagall, and Picasso used to gather, and where some of their artworks are still on display. Reservations can only be made by email or phone.
  • Play a game of pétanque at the Place du Jeu de Boules (Place du Général de Gaulle) at the entrance of the medieval town. The local tourist office rents out boules and can arrange a private lesson on request. It’s the perfect activity to experience Saint-Paul de Vence’s Provençal rhythm.
  • Visit Fondation Maeght, one of the most important modern art museums in southern France. It’s a 10-15 minute walk from the village center, and along the way, you can visit Chapelle Saint-Claude.

Full day option B: Combine Saint-Paul de Vence with another destination

This is the most efficient way to experience multiple sides of the French Riviera in one day.

  • Saint-Paul de Vence + Antibes: After exploring the village of Saint-Paul de Vence in the morning, continue to Antibes, where you can enjoy a seaside lunch, explore the Old Town, wander the Port Vauban, walk the ramparts, and visit the Picasso museum. Or you can switch the order and start your day trip in Antibes; that way, you can experience the Marché Provençal in Antibes in the morning, one of my favorite French Riviera markets.
  • Saint-Paul de Vence + Vence: If you’re traveling during the off-season, you can follow this hiking trail to Vence to visit the Chapelle du Rosaire (Rosary Chapel) and admire the beautiful stained-glass window by Matisse. During the summer months, there’s a shuttle bus that connects the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul de Vence to the Rosary Chapel in Vence.

Full day option C: Hinterland villages drive

Saint-Paul de Vence also works very well as the starting point for a scenic drive through the countryside of the Alpes-Maritimes. Within a short distance, you’ll find several beautiful hilltop villages that offer a different atmosphere from the coastal towns.

A classic route includes stops in:

  • Tourrettes-sur-Loup, known for its violet cultivation and charming stone streets.
  • Gourdon, dramatically perched high above the Loup Valley.
  • Grasse, the historic perfume capital of France.

This kind of loop makes a rewarding full-day itinerary if you’re traveling by car and want to explore beyond the coastline.

  • Half-day vs full day: Half-day = is ideal for the village itself (~2-4 hours). Full day = only recommended if you’re looking to fill your travel schedule and prefer a slower travel pace.
  • Arrive early or in the late afternoon if possible: Visiting outside the busy mid-day gives you a quieter atmosphere and makes it easier to enjoy the narrow streets before they fill up.
  • Transportation: If you happen to travel to Saint-Paul de Vence by ride-share or taxi, make sure to reserve your return trip in advance.
  • Plan for parking if you’re driving: The historic center itself is pedestrian-only, so you’ll need to park in one of the public parking areas just outside the village walls. The main parking facility is super expensive; you can find alternatives in my transportation guide.

  • Shopping Tip: If you plan to buy nougat or other products sold by weight, ask for the price per kilogram before anything is cut or packaged, and make sure you’re happy with the quantity being prepared.
